Recalibration

Today was a day to recalibrate.  A day to remind myself how blessed I am, a day to whisper my gratitudes into the warm Florida wind, and a day to rechart the direction of my life.

Good things are to come.  Project updates soon.

The Midnight Shuffle & Movie Night

The midnight shuffle ran me ragged this year.  Thankfully the last two weeks of my summer schedule has made it possible for all my "moonlighting" projects to become my "day" projects.  This means I can actually have a night free to enjoy a movie with a dear friend.  I can't remember when the last time that has happened but believe you me, I plan on reveling in it entirely because... because it's back to the grind next week...

Be Still My Heart

Sometimes the best cure for the restless soul is to drop everything and go-- go for a walk, go home, go travel, go to the beach...  I dropped everything last week and travelled to visit my amazing sister in San Francisco.  And then, then I went home.  How sweet it was to be home.

But, I'm not blogging about my Napa Valley adventure or my time spent at the lakehouse yet because I seem to have fallen in love on my flight back to Florida.  And when you fall in love, you need to let it share it with everyone.  So, ladies and gentlemen, I introduce you to my new love, Joan's on Third in Los Angeles. I've never been here, but be still my heart, I'm smitten.

Even Joan's bathrooms are well styled:

Besides the gorgeous interior design of the bakery and what I can only assume are the most delicious of gourmet treats, what impresses me most about Joan's business is her dedication to her family.  I was inspired to see she linked a gallery of images tagged, "Family Photos" right above the other impressive galleries of the marketplace and  her catered parties.  The Family Photos gallery has pictures of not only Joan's family (what an adorable grandson, by the way), but her "family" of employees, and even a few "family" sheep and cows!

Find her family photos here.  What a way to make your employees feel like a part of your business.  It's no wonder this woman has met with tremendous success.  *Love*

2012 Food Network's Burger Bash

In the very good company of three girlfriends I had the amazing opportunity to stuff my face with some of the most delicious and creative burgers you could ever imagine.  This year's Burger Bash at the South Beach Food and Wine Festival ate me under the table.  So many burgers, so little time...

This year's winner was none other than the Iron Chef (and fellow midwesterner) Michael Symon.  This was a three-peat for Michael, and he deserved it.  I can attest to the amazingness of his "Porky Burger" from his B Spot restaurant in Cleveland, Ohio:

"Pork and Bacon burger topped with pulled pork and slaw with a side of pork cracklin' chips"

I skipped the pork cracklin' chips but thoroughly agreed with Rachel Ray's decision to declare Michael the true burger king.  A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.  Right before he won, he was gracious enough to pose with yours truly :)

My second favorite?  The Luther from Bulldog Burger in Miami:

"Beef burger with aged cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, caramlized onions and Bulldog Burger sauce served on a sweet glazed bun"

It was like eating a cheeseburger stuffed into a glazed donut. I know-- it sounds disgusting, right?  Trust me, somehow it worked.  Heavenly.

I was a rookie burger basher without a doubt!  With 35 chefs competing with their own take on the best burger in the world, I sadly only sampled about five.   I learned from a few seasoned professionals that the real foodies know to take just one bite of each burger so they don't become comatose too early in the night.  Who would have guessed that the figure conscious mavens of South Beach were primed with such a competitive grub strategy?   I, on the other hand, had no planned strategy and unfortunatley felt so stuffed I could have been rolled out of the bash like Violet Beauregarde in Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory after two booths.  By my fifth burger I was seeing sirloin everytime I blinked.  Whoa.

Overall,  I had a blast enjoying the scene and getting to meet some of my favorite Food Network idols.  Next year, I'll go armed with a new strategy and a much emptier stomach!

Apron Obession

{via Ice Milk Aprons}
Some of my favorite memories growing up are of cooking with my mom.  She's an excellent cook.  Hailing from a long line of good gourmets, my mom could make the only two ingredients left in a cupboard into a five course meal.  Often times, she did just that-- especially when we were growing up and didn't have much in the lines of a "cushion" in terms of the finances.  My mom is truly talented in the culinary arts world.  She's the type to grow her own herbs, to use real butter in all her recipes, and the type who never uses measuring cups yet everything seems to be miraculously perfect when all is baked and done.  You know the type I'm talking about, I'm sure.

Funny then, that I was recalling these memories over the Christmas vacation when we were all in charge of cooking a meal each night that we were together (think of it like "Top Chef: Family Style."  It was so much fun, and I highly recommend you do it with your family or friends!).  I stumbled upon these aprons in a magazine and instantly fell in love.  I remember being so excited as a little girl to put on my mom's apron and wrap the tie around my tiny waist ten million times.  These aprons by Ice Milk remind me of the grace my mom always had while she cooked and the elegance that I still admire about her today.

Now, which one to order AND which one to stock in the future coffee shop are the essential questions!

And if you haven't swooned enough already, their Wordpress blog is absolutely beautiful as well!  Riddled with recipes, family vignettes and amazing business inspiration, I hope you enjoy perusing as much as I did!

Falling

{via Pinterest}

Falling down, falling behind, falling to pieces, falling head over heels-- guilty of them all in the past six months.

There's nothing like having your loved ones there to remind you of who you are when even you yourself don't seem to remember any more.

Now I know where I stand and I'm ready to get this year started with a clearer focus than I've had in a long, long time.

Keep Calm & Have a Cup of Tea

Allow me to take you on a flashback to August when I had the very wonderful pleasure of visiting England and Scotland.  I loved the trip.  In fact, I distinctly remember being in Edinburgh and thinking that if someone told me I could stay and live there if I only agreed to start a brand new job shoveling horse [you know what] and left everything I owned in the states, I would have agreed right then and there.

So what did I love the most about the trip?  Besides the amazing company of my sister and the divine hospitality of a dear friend in Newcastle, having so many things that I've studied or taught from a book appear life size and in 3-D was by far the biggest thrill of the 10 days.  I'll post the pictures that look like romantic scenes from Braveheart soon so I can share just how beautiful, surreal, and serene the experience was with you.  Every castle, every mountain, every flock of sheep grazing on the foggy countryside, made me feel like William Wallace was going to appear in front of me at any moment and whisk me away into the Highland hills.  Yeah, I know, head completely in the clouds!

When I wasn't being an annoying history nerd and sappy romantic, I was enjoying the UK's finest foods and refreshments.  So many people told me the food in England and Scotland wouldn't be very good, but I found quite the opposite to be true.  I had the best smoked salmon I've ever eaten in my life at a pub on the shores of Loch Lomond, the most delicious sticky toffee pudding (that still makes my mouth-water) in Newcastle, and my first afternoon tea service at the adorably eclectic Eteaket Tea Room on Frederick Street in Edinburgh.

Perhaps the closest we have to the sophisticated afternoon tea ritual here in the states is our "soup and salad" option at neighborhood cafes.**  I'm curious how an afternoon tea service would do here in America.  I imagine that the appropriate portion sizes, variety of sconces and sandwiches, and the afternoon pick-me-up from the tea would be an ideal lunch option for the busiest of all Americans, yet I have never seen a cafe offer anything remotely similar.  Is it a niche market?  I don't think so.  A gold mine?  Perhaps.  Maybe more of a diamond in the rough as far as an idea goes for now.  I'll post it on my inspiration board to see what I think of the idea in a few months. What I do know, though, is that I need more afternoon tea in my life, fast!

** Disclaimer:  I can't believe I just compared afternoon tea to a "soup and salad" combo but I did, tragically... in an attempt to draw attention to my point that nothing nearly as elegant, timeless, and enjoyable exists in American culture, I'll admit that even I am disappointed in the analogy.  But can you think of a fair comparison?**

(that's me)

(that's not me, but I'm sure she'd be thrilled to know she was chronicled mid-sip on the SLP!)
